While many Americans scoff at the rising prices of most consumer goods, they really don't have a clue as to how lucky they still have it. In fact, this may come as a surprise to many Americans, but many people from Canada actually find products and services so much cheaper in the USA that they cross the border to America to save money on things they use every day. In fact, this isn't just a small group of Canadians, but is in fact a significant number of Canadians that happen to live on the Canada / US border.
What's interesting is that most of these trips are same day trips into the United States. Canadians aren't going to the US for tourism, they're going because products are significantly cheaper. In 2011, there were almost thirty million same day trips into the United States made by Canadian families. The total number of trips by Canadians into the United States was just shy of fifty million. That means that almost sixty percent of Canadian trips into the U.S. were single day trips, and the majority of them were for shopping purposes?
Why would a Canadian want to come to the United States to shop? Well, even the staple groceries are significantly cheaper in the United States than in Canada. In fact, many staple foods such as eggs, chicken, milk, bread, etc, are half the price of their Canadian counterparts. In addition to food, almost all other products are cheaper as well. From clothing to electronics and even airline tickets, the United States seems to be cheaper on just about everything. In fact, almost two million Canadians flew out of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport last year, instead of commuting to Toronto. Why is this? Prices were cheaper all around, sometimes by as much as 40-50%, and most Canadians agree that the facilities are amazing compared to Toronto.
For people wishing to cross from Canada into the United States in order to save money, there are some things they should know. There are many websites out there that address these rules, but any Canadian crossing the border would be wise to pay attention. There are sites out there that list stores by location, sites that list potential price savings, and even sites that have specific lists of things a person can or cannot bring across the border. While shopping across the border is a great idea for anyone interested in saving a buck, a person needs to make sure that what they buy cannot get them in trouble.
